So, this is my first blog post! Although I think of this space more as my art journal. Life is art, and art is life - they can’t be separated.
Creating has been part of the lives of humans since the dawn of time, but why is that? What is the need in us that art fulfils?
At this point someone will be thinking: “I don’t create. I’m not an artist”. But I believe you are. We are all the artist our life; from what we choose to wear, listen to, whatever we seek out that nourishes our souls, is a creative endeavour.
And without a doubt, we are all of us art critics! We know what we like and what we don’t like… Even if we can’t always explain why.
The obvious answer may be that we strive towards something that is pleasing to the eye, but is that the sole reason, or is there a deeper pull lurking underneath the obvious? Again, maybe that deeper pull is something we can’t put into words.
My why is that I started creating based on a simple passion, a yearning to bring to life the visions that pop into my head and letting the
emotions and stories of that world encompass and soothe me.
From that starting point, I believe my Why has evolved and become multi-facetted and varied. Equally varied is what we see in art. Our interpretation of an artwork speaks volumes of ourselves as viewers, and less of the artwork and its artist.
What is your Why? Why do you create? Do you care about the answers? After all, art can be enjoyed just for the sake of enjoying it. And maybe there’s a lot to be said for letting that mysterious pull or urge towards a creation remain just that: A mystery.
